If you don't own a game camera yet and are thinking about purchasing one soon, we've put together some random thoughts that might help. Good luck and don't forget to check out our "Buy A Game Camera" link above.
Things to Ponder
- What is your real purpose for the camera? If you really want to scout more than one location, what about giving up a little quality to invest in two cameras for the same money you could buy the "best" one that fits your needs.
- Do you really need video? Video is cool. It can show you how the animal acts. Again, determine what the true purpose of the camera is. If you plan to document some patterns of travel and location of big animals, the video may be more "cool" than helpful. On the other hand, if you want to monitor one animal and learn about its personality or mannerisms.... video could be really helpful.
- How will you document what you find? Trail cameras are fun but not all that helpful during hunting season if you don't check them regularly and keep track of what you find. If you are not naturally an organized person who follows a routine, you might want to have a plan before you start. Make a family adventure and give individuals certain tasks. Your spouse, girlfriend, or child might make a great organizer of photos. Creat a wall in the den or a bulletin board in the house to track trail camera data.
